A batting strike rate is most useful when it is read in the phase, the conditions and the matchup — not as an average across the innings. The piece walks through the strike rate zone lens, with the bands, the conditions adjustments, and the matchup lens visible.

Six zones the desk reads for T20.

The strike rate zones below are the desk's working reading aid. They separate the innings into phases, and read each phase's strike rate against the conditions and the matchup.

A piece on reading intent

Strike rate is a measure of intent, not talent.

A batting strike rate is most useful when it is read as a measure of intent — the batter's decision about how to spend the side's risk budget in a given phase. The same player can have a strike rate of 110 in the powerplay and 180 in the death; the two numbers describe different decisions.

Most fantasy readers read a batter's overall strike rate. The desk's working view is that the overall number averages across decisions that the player was making differently — and that the more useful number is the phase-by-phase strike rate, in the conditions, against the bowling type.

A batter with an overall strike rate of 130 but a powerplay strike rate of 110 and a death strike rate of 200 is not a 130-strike-rate batter. The batter is two different players in two different phases. The strike rate zone lens is what the desk uses to read the difference.

The strike rate zone lens also interacts with the points system. Most formats have a strike rate band that rewards or penalises intent. The phase-by-phase strike rate tells the desk which phase the points system is most likely to reward — and which phase the batter is most likely to be picked for.

The death-overs strike rate, more carefully

The death overs (16-20) are where the strike rate zones matter most. A death strike rate of 150 is the floor for a finisher; a death strike rate of 180 is the ceiling for most T20 finishers; a death strike rate above 200 is rare and usually means the batter is taking on every ball.

The desk reads the death strike rate in conditions — a 180 on a flat track against pace is a different achievement from a 180 on a slow turner against spin. The conditions edit the band, the phase edits the conditions, and the strike rate is the number at the bottom of the stack.

The anchor's strike rate, properly read

The anchor's strike rate is the most under-read number in fantasy reading. Most anchors bat at a strike rate between 115 and 135 in the middle overs, but the anchor's role is not to score at 135 — it is to rotate at 115 and let the power hitters play at 180+.

The anchor's strike rate is therefore not a measure of intent — it is a measure of the role being done correctly. An anchor at 145 is usually playing the wrong role; an anchor at 110 is usually preserving when the team needs acceleration. The strike rate zone lens is what catches the difference.

A note on boundary hitting

Reading the boundary percentage is reading the intent.

A boundary percentage is the cleanest measure of intent in a T20 innings. The boundary percentage is the share of runs scored in boundaries, and it is a more useful number than the strike rate for reading what a batter is trying to do.

A batter with a strike rate of 130 and a boundary percentage of 55% is doing a different job from a batter with a strike rate of 130 and a boundary percentage of 40%. The first batter is scoring off boundaries; the second is rotating and taking the occasional boundary. The strike rate is the same, but the intent is different. The boundary percentage is the lens that catches the difference.

How the boundary percentage interacts with the conditions lens

A high boundary percentage on a flat pitch in dry air is a different achievement from a high boundary percentage on a slow turner in heavy humidity. The first is the batter reading the conditions and exploiting them; the second is the batter taking on the conditions and getting away with it. The boundary percentage is a measure of intent; the conditions lens is what the desk uses to read whether the intent was rewarded or lucky.

What the boundary percentage does not say

The boundary percentage does not say whether the batter is going to keep scoring at the same rate. A batter with a 60% boundary percentage in one innings might come back next match at 35% — the conditions, the matchup, and the role all change. The boundary percentage is a measure of what happened in one innings, not what will happen in the next.
