Reading economy as a lens, not as a stat.

Most fantasy readers read bowler wickets, not bowler economy. The desk's view is that economy is the more useful lens — it captures both the wickets that happened and the boundaries that did not. The piece walks through the economy lens in detail.

The desk's working economy bands

Six economy bands the desk uses for T20.

The bands below are the desk's working reading aid for T20 cricket. They are not a recommendation — they are a way of holding the bowler's economy in the same head as the conditions, the phase and the matchup.

A piece on reading phase-specific economy

A 7.5 in the powerplay and a 7.5 in the death are not the same.

A bowler's economy has to be read in the phase the bowler is bowling in. A 7.5 in the powerplay (with the field up, with the new ball, against two openers) is excellent. A 7.5 in the death (with the field spread, with the older ball, against the power hitters) is mediocre.

The desk reads economy in three phases — powerplay (overs 1-6), middle (overs 7-15) and death (overs 16-20). Each phase has its own economy band, its own conditions lens, and its own matchup lens.

A powerplay bowler with an economy of 7.5 is doing the role. A powerplay bowler with an economy of 9.5 is being worked. A death bowler with an economy of 7.5 is doing the role. A death bowler with an economy of 9.5 is doing the role on a flat pitch. The phase matters more than the absolute number.

The phase lens also interacts with the conditions lens. A 7.5 in the powerplay on a green seamer is excellent; a 7.5 in the powerplay on a flat track is mediocre. The conditions edit the band, the phase edits the conditions, and the bowler's economy is the number that sits at the bottom of the stack.

The matchup economy lens

The matchup lens reads the bowler's economy against a specific batter or cluster of batters. A spinner with a career economy of 7.2 against right-handers and 8.5 against left-handers is a different pick in a side with three left-handers in the top six.

The desk's standing rule is to read the matchup economy before any bowler pick. A bowler whose career economy against the opposition's top six is one band higher than their overall economy is a matchup-driven pick; a bowler whose economy is the same is a role-driven pick. The two types of picks behave differently in fantasy.

The economy-wickets trade-off

Most formats reward wickets more heavily than economy — which is why the desk reads economy as a separate lens. A bowler who goes for 28 in four overs with one wicket has not done the same job as a bowler who goes for 24 in four overs with three wickets.

The trade-off is the desk's standing rule: when the points system rewards the wicket, the bowler with three wickets will usually outscore the bowler with one — even if the wicket-bowler was less useful in conditions. The desk reads the trade-off in advance, not in retrospect.

A note on dots

Reading dot balls is the most under-used economy lens.

Most economy reads stop at the run rate. The desk's view is that reading the dot-ball percentage is more useful — and that the dot-ball percentage interacts with the conditions lens in ways the run rate does not surface.

A bowler with a 7.0 economy and a 45% dot-ball percentage is doing a different job from a bowler with a 7.0 economy and a 35% dot-ball percentage. The first bowler is building pressure; the second is conceding boundaries but not conceding easy singles. The points system usually does not distinguish between them, but the role lens does — the first is a phase specialist, the second is a containment bowler.

How the dot-ball lens interacts with the matchup lens

The dot-ball lens is most useful when it is read against a specific matchup. A spinner with a 50% dot-ball percentage against right-handers and a 35% dot-ball percentage against left-handers is a different pick in a side with three left-handers in the top six. The matchup lens and the dot-ball lens are not independent — the matchup sets the boundary, the dot-ball percentage tells the desk whether the bowler is reading the boundary.

What the dot-ball lens does not say

The dot-ball lens does not say whether the bowler is going to take wickets. A bowler with a 55% dot-ball percentage and 0 wickets in the spell is doing a different job from a bowler with a 55% dot-ball percentage and 2 wickets — even if the economy is the same. The lens is useful, but it is not the whole story.
