Conditions as constraint, not as tip.

The pitch and conditions piece is the desk's working method for reading the surface, the weather and the boundary length before a match. The lens is treated as a constraint — it edits the side the desk picks, it does not add to it.

Reading the pitch

A pitch is read three times.

The desk reads the pitch at three moments — toss, end of powerplay, back end of the first innings. Each reading tells you something the previous one could not.

Toss

The first reading is the surface and the toss. A dry surface with grass left on is the cue that the pitch will hold early and grip later. A dry surface with the grass rolled in is the cue that the pitch will hold all night. The toss tells you which side of the surface you are likely to bat on first.

End of powerplay

The second reading is at the end of the powerplay. Has the ball come onto the bat or stopped on the surface? Are the batters able to hit through the line or are they working the ball? The powerplay reading confirms or revises the toss reading.

Back end of first innings

The third reading is at the back end of the first innings. Is the spinner getting turn? Is the slower ball working? Is the ball holding in the surface or skidding? The third reading is the one the desk uses most — and the one the broadcast camera is least likely to surface.

Reading the weather

The dew lens and the overhead lens.

The desk reads two weather lenses — the dew lens and the overhead lens. They are independent. A match can be dew-heavy and overhead-clear, or dew-light and overhead-cloudy.

Boundary length, briefly

The square boundaries and the straight boundary tell the desk which scoring arc is most efficient. A short square boundary rewards the cut and the pull; a long straight boundary rewards the lofted drive. A square boundary that is shorter than the straight boundary is the cue that the cut-shot is the highest-percentage scoring arc on the night.

The boundary read interacts with the conditions read. A short square boundary on a slow turner is not as friendly as it sounds — the batters are working the ball, not driving it, and the cut-shot is harder to execute on a slow surface.

The dew question, more carefully

Dew is the most over-rated condition in the broadcast narrative and the most under-rated in the desk's reading. The dew question is not whether there is dew — it is whether the dew is heavy enough to make the ball hard to grip for the spinner in the second innings.

If the dew is heavy enough, the spinner loses 30-40% of their effectiveness over the back end of the second innings. If the dew is light, the spinner is unaffected. The desk's standing rule is to assume medium dew for evening matches in the early part of the season, and adjust only if there is evidence on the night.

Reading the overhead

The overhead lens is the under-read piece of conditions reading.

A heavy overhead (dark cloud, high humidity) is the cue that the ball will swing more than usual in the powerplay, and that the death-overs seamers will get more lateral movement than the dry-air norm. A clear overhead is the cue that the ball will hold its line, that the bounce will be true, and that the batters will be able to hit through the line without surprises.

The humidity lens, in particular

The humidity lens is the piece of conditions reading the desk finds most often under-used. A match played in heavy humidity has more lateral movement for the seamers throughout the innings, not just in the powerplay. The death-overs seamers — usually the most expensive picks in the fantasy format — get more swing in humid conditions than the format usually prices.

How the overhead lens interacts with the boundary read

A short square boundary in heavy humidity is a slightly different proposition from a short square boundary in dry air. In heavy humidity, the batters are working the ball for lateral movement; in dry air, they are driving the ball. The square boundary is more useful in the second case than the first. The boundary read is not a fixed number — it is condition-dependent.
