The captaincy multiplier is the largest single score contribution in most fantasy formats — and the most over-simplified. This piece walks through how the desk uses the multiplier as a reading lens, with worked examples and the trade-offs visible.

The argument

Captain is a 2× option, not a 2× gamble.

The desk's working view is that the captaincy multiplier rewards the read, not the player. The lens separates best player from best differential under captaincy, and treats them as different questions. The piece walks through both questions with examples.

The first question — who is the best player — is the question most fantasy readers ask first. It is the wrong question to anchor the captaincy lens on.

If the consensus is right, the best player will be the captaincy pick. But the consensus is usually right — that is what makes them the best player. The captaincy multiplier, in that case, rewards a player who was going to perform anyway, and the reader gains nothing relative to a side that does not have the captain on the player.

The captaincy multiplier is therefore most useful when the consensus is wrong. The lens asks: who is the player the read says is going to perform, but the consensus has priced low — and why has the consensus priced them low?

The second question — who is the best differential under captaincy — is the question the desk tries to anchor the lens on.

The differential question asks two things at once: who is the player the read says is going to perform, and why is the consensus pricing them low. The two answers must reconcile — the consensus must be wrong for a reason that the read can defend, and the read must be confident enough to put the 2× option on the line.

The captaincy math piece works through three scenarios where the differential question gives a better answer than the best-player question — and one scenario where the best-player question wins. The trade-offs are made explicit, and the desk does not pretend the differential question is always the right one.

The captaincy multiplier, in numbers

In a 2× captaincy format, the captain's expected score is doubled. If the captain's expected score is 50 and the next-best pick is 48, the captaincy multiplier adds 2 expected points. If the captain's expected score is 50 and the differential is 35 with a 35% chance of hitting 90, the expected value is 35 + (0.35 × 55) = 54.25 — well above the consensus pick.

The numbers are not the whole answer — they are the desk's way of making the trade-offs visible. The captaincy lens is a math lens wrapped in a read lens, not the other way around.

When the desk passes on the captaincy multiplier

The desk sometimes picks a side without a captaincy multiplier — that is, picks a player who would be the captain in a 1× format and gives the 2× to a player it does not strongly believe in. The desk's standing rule is that the 2× option should be given to a player the read already endorses, not to a player the read has to be argued into.

If the read does not give the desk a player it believes in strongly enough, the desk passes on the multiplier — and accepts the lower expected score in exchange for a side the read actually endorses. The trade-off is usually the right one.

The most common mistake the desk has watched readers make is the multiplier-as-default — giving the 2× option to the most-mentioned player, on the assumption that the multiplier rewards the obvious pick. The multiplier rewards the read, not the player. If the read supports the obvious pick, the multiplier is well-placed; if the read does not, the multiplier is wasted.

The desk sometimes reads the multiplier as a cost rather than a reward. A 2× option on a player the read does not strongly endorse is a 2× discount on the alternative — the read's preferred pick gets the 1× score, and the alternative gets the 2×. The trade-off is what most readers miss. The multiplier is a re-allocation of expected points, not a free addition to the side.
